What do two girls, Meli and Lani, separated by a thousand years and two thousand miles have in common? Both of their mothers mysteriously disappeared, events beyond their control will change their lives, and both are falling in love. The unlikely hero in their lives is Pueo, the owl.
Itʻs 1929 and Meli is only seven when her mother leaves her on Aunty Min's lānai. As the years go by Meli asks why her mother disappeared, but the story Aunty tells doesn't answer her question. Her family is keeping a secret that she will have to solve on her own. Until she can find out, there are other adventures to keep a fourteen year old girl busy, like making friends with a mysterious young man. A school lesson on the birds of Hawaiʻi intrigues Meli. She hopes her Aunty has the answer to this question: How did Pueo, the owl, come to Hawaiʻi?
With that innocent question Aunty Min begins weaving a tale of magic and wonder, and Meli is introduced to the first people to seek Hawai'i.
2,000 years ago Lani's island life seemed idyllic, but she was growing up on Nuku Hiva during a time when politics and resource scarcity began pressuring the peaceful societies of the South Pacific. The chiefs of her village decide it's time to search for a new island. Her father, a sorcerer, envisions the island they will raise from the ocean. Lani must join the crew, but the boy she loves is denied a place on the voyaging canoe. How will he ever see her again?
In both stories youʻll be swept into a tropical paradise and a series of magical encounters.
